Personal Accident Insurance Explained: The Cover Most People Skip

By VIRA Advisory Team  ยท  September 2026  ยท  6 min read

Of all the insurance products we discuss with clients, personal accident (PA) cover is probably the most under-purchased relative to how genuinely useful it is. Most people have health insurance. Fewer have PA cover. Here's why that gap is worth closing.

What Makes PA Insurance Different

Health insurance reimburses actual medical treatment costs. Personal accident insurance pays a fixed, pre-agreed sum based on the nature of an accidental injury โ€” regardless of what treatment actually costs, and regardless of whether you were even hospitalised. If an accident leaves you with a permanent disability but no extended hospital stay, PA cover still pays out. Health insurance, in that scenario, might pay very little, since the actual treatment cost was low relative to the life-changing nature of the injury.

๐Ÿ’ก The core insight: PA insurance isn't about medical bills. It's about what happens to your income and financial obligations if an accident changes your ability to work โ€” a risk health insurance was never designed to address.

The Four Things PA Insurance Typically Covers

  • Accidental death โ€” a lump sum to your family, distinct from and in addition to any term life insurance payout
  • Permanent total disability โ€” full sum insured if an accident leaves you completely unable to work
  • Permanent partial disability โ€” a percentage of sum insured for specific injuries like loss of a limb or eye, based on a defined benefit table
  • Temporary total disability โ€” a weekly or monthly income benefit while you're recovering and unable to work

Why "I Have Health Insurance" Isn't the Same Answer

Health insurance answers "who pays the hospital." PA insurance answers "what happens to my income while I can't work, and what if I'm permanently unable to work again." These are genuinely different financial risks, and a family's monthly expenses don't pause just because a health insurance claim was settled.

Who This Matters Most For

  • Self-employed professionals and business owners with no employer sick-leave safety net
  • The primary or sole earner in a household
  • Anyone in a manual, field-based, or travel-intensive occupation
  • Anyone who already has term life insurance but hasn't thought about disability specifically

An Important Distinction: Accident vs Illness

PA insurance covers disability from accidents specifically โ€” sudden, external, unforeseen events. It does not cover disability arising from illness, even an equally serious one. A stroke or a degenerative condition wouldn't trigger a PA claim; that risk needs separate critical illness or disability income cover.

What It Actually Costs

PA insurance is generally inexpensive relative to the protection it offers, since it's priced against a narrower, well-defined risk category rather than the broader unpredictability that makes health insurance more expensive. For many people, meaningful PA cover costs a fraction of their health insurance premium.

The Question Worth Asking Yourself

If an accident left you unable to work for six months tomorrow, does your current insurance actually replace that lost income โ€” or does it only cover the hospital bill? For most people we ask this question, the honest answer reveals a gap worth closing.
